A Day in San Miguel – Protests and Opera February, 2017

Woke up to another bright, sunny day – 52 degrees.

Went to church. The UU congregation holds its services in the ballroom of a hotel – about 200 attend. They just celebrated their 30th anniversary. The topic was “Silence”.

After church a bunch of us walked to a parking lot where a large group of Mexicans and ex-pats were congregating for a march through town. Reason? To show the resolve of Mexican citizens to stand up to the threatened policies of Trump. We ex-pats joined in to show our support of our host country. This was one of many demonstrations held around the country. The parade route took us through the main streets of town, with traffic controlled by local police. By the time we arrived at our destination, the main square – El Jardin — The number of marchers grew from about 100 to well over 500. And the temperature was 82 by noon.

Yes, there were signs:

AMOR TRUMPE ODIO (Love Trumps Hate) Had to explain this one. “Trumpe” is not a real Spanish verb. When we referenced the game of Bridge, we saw the “Ah-Hah!” moment.

USA WOMEN FOR MEXICO And others you will see in the accompanying photos. Yes, there were chants:

PUENTES NO MUROS. Bridges not walls.

VIVA MEXICO GENTE UNIDO NO PUEDE ESTA DIVIDO. People united cannot be divided

We finished the day off attending an opera, “Madame Butterfly”. An excellent, sold-out performance. Cost:$15. Value: Priceless. Thus ended another perfect day in San Miguel.
